AIDS2026: Is HIV remission the new cure? – Read in Positive Living

Set against Rio’s flamboyant backdrop of strong activism, AIDS2026 offered a glimpse into the “just around the corner” future of HIV treatment and care. But amid talk of weekly pills, long-acting treatment and prevention, AI and healthier ageing, I sensed a subtle shift from finding an HIV cure towards achieving long-term remission.

With the theme “Rethink, Rebuild, Rise, AIDS2026 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in July brought together more than 7,500 delegates. Running through the science was a strong sense of inequality, amplified by community protests highlighting the devastating impact of funding cuts to the global HIV response. Scientific advances mean little if all people living with HIV cannot access them.
